Terme di Saturnia Spa & Golf Resort ★★★★★

The Saturnia thermal baths, recognised for their therapeutic benefits, have given rise to many myths. People used to say that the heat and odour released by the sulphur steam was caused by the Devil coming out of hell. Still, when we laid eyes on this breath-taking establishment, we found it much more like heaven! We had arrived at the Terme di Saturnia Spa & Golf Resort *****, in the heart of Maremma Tuscany.

Once you get to this part of beautiful Tuscany, you really don’t want to leave. Especially this luxury five star complex, known as one of the most beautiful in the region. The Terme di Saturnia Spa & Golf Resort is not a member of the label Leading Hotel of The World for nothing! The setting is majestic: built on an old limestone building, it seems to emerge from the thermal waters that sit beside it. With their little bridges, whirlpools and gorgeous views, the thermal baths were already calling us.

The entire hotel is a wellbeing centre in itself. From the therapeutic waters to the sports facilities, spa treatments and delicious, healthy food, everything here is set up for you to relax and recharge. We were excited to see our Comfort bedroom, so we quickly went to take a look. And it more than lived up to our expectations, of course. A comfortable 18 m2 and expertly decorated in soft and relaxing tones, it included all the necessary amenities. We fell for the magnificent view over the hot springs, and we delighted by the softness of our bath robes. Now we were kitted out with our main outfit of the holiday!

In fact, we had barely brought anything with us. There was no need; the hotel has a clothes and cosmetics shop, hairdressers and studio where you can find the best of Tuscan products. My husband did bring his golf kit, though, because he had heard about the hotel’s 18-hole course. This is also an essential component of the Terme di Saturnia Spa & Golf Resort’s reputation. Designed by a renowned architect, the famous Californian Ronald Fream, the course is set in magnificent Tuscan countryside.

And after your round, the spa offers a special back massage for golfers. So this is where my husband found me, because I preferred to experience the historical feel of the Roman baths and pamper myself with relaxing massages in the spa. It really was a delight for the senses: the smell of essential oils, the sight of the countryside setting, the feel of the massage on your back and the sound of water, running and splashing.  
There was only the last of the five senses that remained to be indulged, and for that, the hotel’s two restaurants were more than enough. A candlelit dinner in either Aqualuce or All’Acquacotta is the perfect end to your day. We tried the Tuscan food by Chef Alessandro Bocci, who has been awarded a Michelin star for his unique culinary inventions.

The following day, even though the food in our little paradise had already taken us on a journey around Tuscany, we headed out to visit it for real. With six UNESCO world heritage sites, everyone’s favourite part of Italy deserves more than one outing.
